A correctly specified and installed tile floor handles daily traffic, cleaning and the general wear of a busy house without changing much. That is why tiles have held their place in Australian bathrooms and kitchens for so long.
Sweep or vacuum, then mop. A glazed surface is the finished surface, so there is no coating to maintain. Textured tiles ask a little more, because relief holds onto dirt that a smooth glaze does not.
Bathrooms, laundries and kitchens are where tiles are used most, because a tiled surface installed as part of a properly built wet area copes with water in a way most floors cannot. The waterproofing itself sits underneath, and that is a separate part of the job.
Marble and natural stone looks let you take the character of those materials into a room without using the material itself, and plain tiles let grout, layout and size carry the design instead.
Where the products are approved for both, running a related tile across a bathroom floor and up the walls ties a small room together in a way that changing materials at every surface cannot.
A damaged tile can often be cut out and replaced without touching the rest of the floor, provided matching stock is still available. Keeping a few spares from the original order is what makes that possible later.

The useful way to sort tiles is not by what they are made of, but by what the manufacturer approves them for. Two tiles that look almost identical can be approved for completely different surfaces.
Clay-based tiles finished with a fired surface glaze that carries the colour and pattern. Every tile in the Andersens range on this page is a glazed ceramic tile. The glaze is what you clean, and it is why the surface does not need sealing the way a porous tile would.
Porcelain is ceramic made by a denser process, and it is often specified where a floor sees heavy use or where a product needs to suit outdoor conditions. It is not part of the range shown on this page, so ask your local Andersens what can be ordered in if porcelain is what your project needs.
A floor tile is one the manufacturer approves for foot traffic in the area you have in mind. That approval comes from the product documentation, not from how thick or heavy the tile looks, so check it for the specific tile rather than assuming.
Wall tiles are made for vertical surfaces and many are not approved to be walked on. Some tiles are approved for both. Never move a tile from a wall to a floor on the strength of its appearance.
A tile used deliberately as an accent rather than a field, in a shower niche, behind a vanity, across a splashback or on a single wall. The same approval questions apply, so a feature tile still needs to suit the surface it is going on.
Rectified tiles have their edges mechanically cut square after firing, so the finished sizes are more consistent than a pressed edge. That can allow a tighter, more uniform grout joint, subject to the product guidance and what your installer recommends for the substrate.
The opposite approach, where the edge is slightly rounded rather than squared. It gives a softer joint line and a more forgiving install, and it is a different look rather than a lesser one.
Tiles do not waterproof a bathroom. Waterproofing a wet area is a membrane and installation system that goes in underneath the tile, and it is subject to Australian building requirements. It is the part of the job you never see and the part that matters most. Water performance also varies between tile products, so check the specification for the tile you are considering and treat the waterproofing as its own piece of work, not as something the tile takes care of.
Three decisions do most of the work on a tiled room: the look, the size and the finish. Grout is the fourth, and it changes the result more than most people expect.
Veining and movement without natural marble. The scale of the veining is the thing to judge, because a pattern that reads well on one tile can look repetitive across a whole floor. Lay several tiles out together before you decide.
Travertine, limestone and other natural stone effects, usually in warm neutrals. These sit comfortably with timber, cream and earthy palettes, and they hide everyday traffic better than a flat colour.
The quietest option, and the one that lets grout, layout and tile size do the design work. A white field tile with a considered grout colour is a deliberate choice, not a default.
Reflects light, which lifts a small or dim room and wipes down easily. It also shows smears and shows up an uneven substrate, so it is more commonly used on walls than across large floors.
Lower sheen and a softer, more contemporary look. Andersens own bathroom tile guide suggests considering a matt ceramic tile for bathroom floors where you want more traction than a polished surface. Confirm the surface characteristics for the specific tile you are looking at.
The most reflective of the three, and the most decorative. Best judged in the room it is going into, under both daylight and the lighting you actually use at night.
Surface relief you can feel, which adds depth on a feature wall and gives a more natural stone character. Texture does collect more dirt than a smooth glaze, so it asks a little more of your cleaning routine.
Sizes in millimetres, read from the products on this page and listed smallest face to largest. Smaller formats suit splashbacks, niches and feature areas.
