Cork flooring

Naturally comfortable flooring with warmth and character. Cork has a gently cushioned feel that makes living rooms, bedrooms and home offices warmer, quieter and easier to stand on than a rigid floor.

Andersens stocks pre-finished cork tiles. They are factory finished, so there is no sanding or polishing after they go down. Your local team can talk you through colours, finishes and what your rooms would need.

The soft hard floor

Why choose cork.

  • Cushioned underfoot

Cork’s cellular structure gives it a natural give that rigid floors do not have. It is noticeably more forgiving to stand on, which is worth knowing if you cook, work or stand in one room a lot.

  • Warmer than most hard floors

Cork is valued for its insulating characteristics and tends to feel warmer underfoot than tile or stone. How much depends on the product, subfloor and room.

  • Softens sound

Cork takes the sharpness out of footsteps and movement, which is why it comes up for bedrooms, studies, media rooms and upstairs living areas.

  • A material with real character

The pattern is the cork itself, not a print. Tone and texture vary tile to tile, and that variation is the material rather than a fault.

  • Harvested without felling the tree

Cork bark can be stripped and left to regenerate, so the oak keeps growing. The full environmental picture still depends on manufacturing, coatings, adhesives, transport and how long the floor lasts.

Worth knowing before you choose. Cork compresses, so heavy or concentrated loads can leave impressions. It can be scratched by grit, pet claws and furniture being dragged. Surface finishes can change colour under strong sunlight, and some cork floors need periodic recoating. None of that rules cork out. It is why furniture protectors, entry mats and the right product for the room matter more here than with a rigid floor.

Room by room

Where cork works best.

Cork suits some rooms straightforwardly and others only with the right product and installation. Suitability is confirmed at product level, and your local store will check it with you.

A quick summary. General guidance only. Suitability is confirmed against the specific product, not the category.
Room General guidance
Living room Often suitable, subject to product
Bedroom Often suitable
Home office Often suitable, with furniture protection
Media room Often suitable
Hallway Check traffic rating and finish
Kitchen Confirm product and moisture suitability
Laundry Confirm product, installation and moisture requirements
Bathroom Specialist assessment required
Covered outdoor area Not assumed suitable unless explicitly approved

Tiles, planks and finishes.

Cork products differ in format, construction, finish and how they are installed. The biggest practical difference is whether the finish is applied at the factory or on site after laying.

Pre-finished cork tiles

Tiles supplied with the surface finish already applied at the factory, so no sanding or polishing is needed after installation. The Andersens cork range is a pre-finished tile with micro-bevelled edges.

Unfinished cork tiles

Supplied raw and sanded, sealed and coated on site after laying. This gives more control over the final finish but adds steps, time and cost to the job.

Cork planks and floating cork

Plank-format products with a cork surface over a layered core, usually installed as a floating floor rather than glued down.

What Andersens stocks. The cork range on this page is a pre-finished tile. If you are after unfinished cork or a floating cork plank, talk to your local store about what can be arranged.

Colour and pattern

Not just brown.

Modern cork comes in a good deal more than the traditional brown most people picture. Colour, pattern scale and finish all vary between products.

Natural cork tonesDirection

The organic grain and tonal variation left visible. Works with mid-century interiors, timber cabinetry and warm neutral palettes.

Light corkDirection

Lighter finishes read as more contemporary and can help a smaller room feel brighter.

Mid-tone corkDirection

The most versatile choice, coordinating with both warm and cool neutral interiors.

Dark corkDirection

Creates contrast and depth, but the hardest to judge from a sample. See it in the actual room and lighting.

Pattern variationDirection

Cork patterning can be fine, coarse, linear or mottled depending on the product. Look at several tiles rather than one, because the variation is the material, not a defect.

Pre-finished surfacesDirection

A factory-applied finish means no sanding or polishing after installation. Micro-bevelled edges give each tile a subtle definition.

Autumn Calais Alloy Tile Calais Cream Copenhagen Harmony Madeira Madeira White Traditional Cork Imports Look at cork across several tiles rather than one small piece, because the natural variation only shows up over an area. Check it in daylight, under evening lighting, beside your walls and cabinetry, and from standing height.
