Ask a question

Dependence on technology is a fact of modern life, but our hyper-connectedness with all things digital also delivers the stresses of the world right into our palms. Fortunately, people seem to be clueing in to the need for downtime to nurture their mental well-being. The interior design world has embraced this desire for a slower pace with the Escapism trend.

Aiming to reconnect people with the real world, this trend aims to create restful retreats where you can unwind and hide away from the hassles of daily life. When designing interiors, this means making considered choices that foster a sense of tranquility. You don’t have to be an interior designer to style a haven in your home, though. We have compiled a list of ideas and tips for the creation of your own stress-free zone below.

Sit right

Developing a crick in your neck when you’re trying to relax is counterproductive to say the least. Pick a comfortable perch to curl up on. This year’s furniture trends have tended towards softer, more rounded forms. Whether it’s an overstuffed armchair, casual daybed, or trendy beanbag, choose furniture that’s just a little bit indulgent to help you instantly make the transition from work to play. If you’re intending for your retreat to be more of a social space, make sure there’s adequate seating for all, and keep the old, sunken sofa for kerbside collection.

Hanging Chair

Lighten up

Make sure you have appropriate lighting for your chill-out style. Sunlight has an energising quality (and it’s free!) and is great if you want to do some productive recreation. Consider dimmable lights so you can adjust the mood of the area. If reading is your activity of choice, a poorly or harshly-lit reading environment can put strain on your eyes, so ensure you have a good task light like a desk or floor lamp handy. Window coverings like blinds and shutters can help you achieve more control over your lighting conditions and also your privacy.

Sound off

Soundproof walls might not be an option for your little escape, but there are other things you can do to minimise noise, and in turn, distractions. Carpet has great sound insulating qualities, and there are underlays available which help to enhance this feature. The more plush styles of carpet are perfect for absorbing background noise, not to mention, they feel wonderfully luxurious to walk on, too. Think vertical and hang rugs on the wall to make a striking design statement, with the added bonus of helping to absorb noise as well.

Carpeted Art Room

Layer up

Construct a cosy nest with layered textiles. Pieces like sheepskin rugs, artisan weavings, and textured cushions not only look stylish, but will also engage your tactile senses.

Go green

Bring a touch of vitality to your retreat with some indoor plants. Greenery not only improves air quality but will also link your indoor space to the outdoors. Pick up some beautiful planters and pot some succulents, or create your own terrarium. If you’ve been blessed with a black thumb, incorporate some botanical prints into your design via objects like cushions or wall art.

Draw the line

Leave your day at the door. Free your sanctuary of items that stress you out. Banish anything that belongs on a ‘To Do’ list. De-cluttering not only produces the illusion of a bigger space but it aids in establishing boundaries for areas of work and areas of play. Having a clear purpose for your spaces will assist you in getting into the right frame of mind when it comes time to get back to the daily grind.

Finally, make sure your refuge caters to you. Trends are a good starting point for gathering inspiration, but add your personal touches to truly make the space your own.
