When choosing floor tiles for your home or commercial area, it’s important to consider the foot traffic and environment that the tiles will be exposed to. For example, dry areas with heavy foot traffic may require a durable porcelain base, while wet areas may require textured tiles may to create a non-slip environment.

When selecting tiles for your home or commercial area, it’s important to consider the quality, base and finish of each product. It’s also important to assess the environment and foot traffic that the tiles will be exposed to.

Below are some important points to consider when making your tiling choice.

  • Tile qualities come in ‘firsts’ and ‘seconds’ due to their manufacturing process.
  • Firsts are of higher quality, and will therefore be a more expensive option.
  • Seconds are ideal for buyers searching for affordable tiles.

  • Porcelain base tiles are denser than other styles and will stand up to heavier traffic use. Normal porcelain tiles have a matt finish that may be useful for the creation of anti-slip environments.
  • Monocottura are ‘single fired’ to create strong, durable ceramic tiles. These are most appropriate for use floor tiles in domestic living areas and outdoor environments.

  • Polished Porcelain tiles reflect light to create an illusion of space.
  • Gloss tiles can add a touch glamour to living spaces, however these types of tiles can be slippery in wet environments. We suggest gloss for kitchen tiles, splashbacks, walls and low foot traffic areas.
  • Textures help to create non-slip environments. Textures are suggested for bathroom tiles, outdoor tiles or commercial areas with heavier traffic.
  • Heavily textured, non-slip tiles are more difficult to clean and tend to show dirty marks more readily
